Shoreline Protection

Sea walls are solid barriers constructed parallel to the shore, designed to absorb and deflect wave energy. Made from concrete, steel, or stone, sea walls offer durable protection for waterfronts.

Sheet piling involves driving interlocking steel, vinyl, or wood sheets into the seabed to create a continuous vertical barrier. Sheet piling prevents shoreline erosion and stabilizes waterfronts but may require periodic maintenance to prevent corrosion or damage.

Rip rap consists of loose rock or rubble placed along the shoreline to absorb and reduce wave energy. This method is cost-effective, flexible, and environmentally friendly, promoting drainage while enabling some habitat for marine life. Rip rap is well-suited for sloped shorelines but may need replenishment after severe storms.

Selecting the right shoreline protection method depends on environmental factors, budget, and land use objectives. Combining techniques can also optimize resilience while minimizing ecological impacts, ensuring sustainable coastal defense in the face of changing climate conditions.
